Speaker: Tristan Sharp, head of education programs AGNSW
Each year ARTEXPRESS at the AGNSW brings together outstanding artworks produced by HSC students. Tristan Sharp will discuss his experiences as the curator of ARTEXPRESS for the AGNSW sharing some of the highlights. A wonderful opportunity for young artists, parents and teachers to get an insight into this hugely successful exhibition.

This session will be held in the A&I Hall green room.

Private Dreams & Nightmares
Artist: James Guppy introduced by Susi Muddiman
As part of his 20th anniversary celebrations as an artist James joins FEHVA this year to share with us his experiences over this time, in particular how he has pushed boundaries in order to be true to his art. Tweed River Art Gallery will be touring a survey of James’ work to 11 galleries along the East Coast of Australia from June 2009.

Bearing Witness
Artist: Fiona Foley introduced by Frances Bell Parker
As a distinguished Australian artist recognised for her attention to contemporary indigenous life Foley gives expressive form to complex issues of society and history. In dealing with the issues that inform her art Fiona is challenged with maintaining cultural integrity regardless of consequence. Fiona talks about her latest body of work and the political and emotional challenges she faced in bringing it to fruition...

Multiple Bodies
Artist: Julie Rrap
A major figure in Australian contemporary art Rrap works with photography, painting, sculpture, performance and video in an ongoing project concerned with representations of the body. Julie takes you on a journey through her esteemed career specifically illustrating the evolution of her interests in digital media and the moving image, in which the “reality of the virtual” is explored.

A Relationship Between Nature & Technology
Artist: Patricia Piccinini introduced by Steven Alderton
Patricia is one of Australia’s leading contemporary artists, her work displays a fascination with increasingly fluid relationships between nature and technology. She works with a wide range of media including sculpture, video, drawing, installation and photography. Patricia will take us through her incredible journey, illustrating how her practice has evolved, and discussing the key concerns that her work address.

Ideas & Connections
Artist: Hossein Valamanesh
Born in Iran and growing up in Australia, Valamanesh found ways to meld these two cultures in works that relate to memory, cultural dislocation, loss and the progression of time. He is best known for his sculptures and installations and innovative use of natural and found materials. His work is included in major public galleries in Australia.

Art of Australia
Speaker: Art critic John McDonald converses with Jill Eddington
John McDonald refers to his recently published book Art of Australia and discusses his take on the artists, eras and movements which have pushed the boundaries of Australian art along. Jill Eddington will facilitate questions from the audience.
